Powerful Agreement is Just the Starting Place…

During a coaching session with one of my Vice President clients…Powerful Agreement is Just the Starting Place
Contract disputes? Looking for what is missing?  Can’t get things moving?  Communication could be what has things stopped.

3 levels of communication.  Often, the first step is as far as people get…
1. What’s expected and agreed to.  Often, contracts consider only this and miss the next 2 areas.
2. What’s expected and not agreed to.
3. The unexpected.
The expected and the agreed to areas that come out in discussions are just a starting place.  Even when spoken agreements are powerful, to be extraordinary, you must look beyond the expected and spoken.

Here’s an example.  When a waitress asks “how’s your meal?” There are probably more things not said than are said.  Many times a customer will never return once an unspoken expectation is not met.

Unspoken expectations are more powerful and dangerous than those that are expressed and agreed to.  When missed, these “unspoken” expectations are bombshells waiting to explode.  Artful nurturing, commitment and communication are needed to build a connection with others so these unexpressed areas can be revealed.

Experience is the source for anticipating the unexpected.  Just like when we drive a car, we look all around us and try to anticpate.  Many accidents are avoided by looking for the unexpected, and by expecting the unexpected.

So, taking on 2 additional areas helps us be extraordinary in our personal and professional relationships:

  • Communication that digs and looks to discover what is expected that isn’t spoken.
  • Experience teaches us to expect the unexpected and act accordingly.
